Where Were You On The PS3's Release Day?
November 17 was the big release date of the Sony PlayStation 3 in North America and the excitement is still far from dying down. A very limited supply of new PS3 game consoles were released in North America, estimated to be between two hundred and fifty thousand units (which is what retailers report they received) and four hundred thousand (which is the number of units that was expected to ship). Yet despite its high price retailers were sold out in a matter of hours and many of them were unable to meet their preorder obligations. Employees who had preordered were denied their consoles and asked, actually told, that they would get theirs when the next shipments came in.The same thing happened in Japan where the release date was November 11th, almost a week earlier. In twenty-four hours they sold just over eighty one thousand Playstation 3 consoles.
Was this a deliberate ploy of Sony to increase the anticipation in the United States as expectant fans of the PS3 watched as those across the ocean were already bringing their new game consoles home? Many irate North Americans question why it was released there first.
And what about the Sony PlayStation 3 release date in Europe and Australia? Is there a reason that only certain areas of the world were thought to deserve these game consoles in time for Christmas and yet others were not? Why do Europeans and Australians have to wait for a PS3 release date of March 2007? This has angered a lot of fans, especially with Sony threatening anyone who sells a North American model overseas with legal action.
The PS3 release date of the second shipment has not been announced yet. Sony is promising to ship another million ps3 game consoles by the end of the year or hopefully before Christmas so that they'll be available in time for gift givers to get them. Many people are paying a large premium over retail price on auction sites like eBay to ensure that they get their hands on a PS3.
Many consumers are complaining that the Sony PlayStation 3's staggered release dates are planned event to generate more interest than there would be if the consoles came out with a good supply. Irate shoppers are claiming that the shortage is nothing more than a publicity stunt designed by Sony to increase its flagging share of the TV game market. With the other new game consoles coming out in good supply and worries about the PS3 being twice the price and maybe not twice the kick many feel that generating publicity is more important than supplying the game.
The company is of course denying any such motivation and sites instead high research and development costs, production problems and delays by suppliers that caused the slow down of their launch. They had hoped for the original PS3 release date in the spring but delays seemed inevitable.
